DIY Burlap Wreath

I know this is not the first time you have seen a burlap wreath. In fact it is probably the 100th time it has been done. But, I do want to show you this simple wreath because it was very easy and inexpensive.

Materials:
2 1/2 to 3 yards of burlap $6
1 large green wire floral wreath (I bought mine at Michaels) $2.99
rotary cutter or scissors
self healing cutting mat (only if you use a rotary cutter)

Step 1: Cut the burlap into strips. My strips were 1"X6"

Step 2: Tie each strip onto the green wire wreath in a single knot

Step 3: Continue to tie burlap strips onto the wreath while drinking wine and watching 30 Rock

Step 4: Spray the finished wreath with starch or hairspray so all of the loose ends don't fall off

Step 5: Hang and Enjoy

The entire project took about 1 hour and 15 minutes to cut and tie

  1. I love this! I am having a diy rustic style wedding and this would be perfect. I am going to try to make it this weekend. A similar one sells on Etsy for $55.

  2. I have been looking for a tutorial on how to make this particular burlap wreath forever!! Thanks so much for posting it!! I just have one question. Did you use the small burlap rolls you can buy or did you buy it off the bolt and cut it like that? Thanks!!

    1. From one of the top pictures, looks like she bought it off the bolt. You could do either way though.

  4. About how many strip did you have to cut to do this one? Just not sure which wire you tie them to.

  7. How many strips did you cut and which part of the wreath wire did you tie the strips on, just the outside wire or all of the wires?

    1. I made a denim wreath with this same method and tied to all of the wires until it was as full as I wanted. Hope this helps

  8. I think the amount of strips would really depend on how full you wanted it. This is not my project but im going to make one. I think you probably tie to all wires. On an added note if you dabbed a little glue or hot glue along the middle of the edge it would still fray and stay on a lot better.

  10. You could also use just a wire hanger bent into a circle. I've done that with sandwich bags to make a wintery-looking wreath.

  11. I love this but the burlap on my strips kept coming undone. If I cut them larger it was harder to tie. Grrr. I'll try again soon.

  12. I really love it! It gave me a lot of ideas. You can use different kinds of burlap colors and styles and make it multicolored for Fall, Xmas, etc. Thank you so much. The wreaths are so expensive at Hobby Lobby and Michael's that this is a blessing!

  13. I just completed this project and thought I could add some details that may be helpful : I bought 3 yards of burlap. My sections were 9in x 1in because I liked the wreath a little fuller. My wire wreath had 10 sections and 4 rows, I used 28 pieces of burlap per section ( 7 ties times the 4 rows). So all together I used 280 strip of burlap. Just thought others might find some specifics useful. I love it! I plan to change out bows or decals per holiday so I can use it year round!
